Dear Friends of the Archives,

WE STAND ON GUARD FOR THEE

The Canadian Expeditionary Force “Holds the Line” in Belgium 1915

It was the first major battle for Canadians in WW1, and their courage and bravery left its mark on a Belgian battlefield. On the 100th anniversary of the Second Battle of Ypres, we remember the sacrifice of Canadian soldiers, some from Charlotte County,  who engaged in  the horrific battle in the trenches and under poison gas. Severe losses of soldiers and more wounded or captured marked Canadians show of common bravery  with the result that “We had held the line” in one of the most critical battles of WW1.

Charlotte County, while far from the battle line of first defense, sent men to the front. They have become our heroes and part of our history.

The history of our beautiful county is as varied as it is rich – measured by the diversification of its inhabitants, the true spirit of working together, the willingness of our men and women to fight for our freedom and the demonstration of pride in where we live.

As a County Archives, we share that pride and are committed to keeping our history preserved for the interest of future generations. This rich repository is our legacy. There are stories to tell, but we need your help. We are anxious to tell the stories of Charlotte County’s men and women who served in the Great War, who were willing to give up everything and venture afield, with little thought to their personal safety, to fight in unknown theatres of war to defend our rights and freedoms. Their sacrifice we remember each year on November 11th. They are never to be forgotten.

We ask that you consider maintaining your financial support to assist us in bringing Charlotte County’s heritage to a larger audience, to help us maintain and grow programs, to tell the story of our historic links to the Great War and to ensure we can continue to be the repository of our county’s rich history.

Donations may be made via our website www.ccarchives.ca or by use of the enclosed card/envelope sent to the address at the top of this page.

Please know that your donation to the Charlotte County Archives will be used to preserve our unique heritage for the enjoyment of present and future generations.
